What is exactly the 5-elements theory and is it significant only in Acupuncture or also in other fields of Chinese thought and arts? Marco. |

Dear Marco The 5 element theory is a systemologic thinking/perception/distinguishing of the different qualities in the changing phases of Yin-Yang. It gives a system to perceive/distinguish almost everything manifest. So it can be used in all fields. example; Wood - idea, Fire - maturity, Spleen - manifestation, Metal - Completion.. and so on. It is a structure of perception that is really rewarding to explore and never stops fascinating. There is always more to discover. |

It is very true what Holger writes, and just to illustrate, here is a table presenting the various manifestations of the elements' energies as physical phenomena in almost every aspect of our physical world:
Wood | Fire | Earth | Metal | Water | liver | heart | spleen | lung | kidney | sight | speaking | taste | smell | hearing | tendons | b.vessels | flesh | skin | bones | nails | tongue | lips | b.hair | ears | anger | joy | obsession | sorrow | fear | wind | heat | dampness | dryness | cold | spring | summer | long summer | automn | winter | east | south | center | west | north | sour | bitter | sweet | spicy | salty | ...and so on. |
