Hi, A friend has developed arteritis and has been neglected for 1 year by his family and attendent physicians. He has requested my help. His most serious symptom is an inner coldness. It is so bad that he has difficulty thinking to the point of loss of mobility. I have started the treatment with using a single needle (to conserve his already diminished energy) with moxa (on the neddle) to Cv5 very precisely placed. I have come across a formula for arteritis Sp6 Lu9 St43 can you suggest any refinements or alternatives. My only fear is that he will not receive the frequency of treatment that he requires in the circumstances. Please can you help? Jan. |

This condition should be very well diagnosed in terms of Chinese medicine Jan. I gather that there is a major kidney yang deficiency, but usually the picture is more complex, and other sub conditions co-exist, sometimes contradicting each other. I would suggest the following as a basic formula: Start: B-13/ 15/ 17/ Du-4/ Du-14 - moxa on last 2 points L-9/ St-36/ Sp-6/ Sp-10/ Ren-4/ Ren-6 - Moxa on last 2 points As said, this is only a basic formula. Some other points need to be added according to your specific discrimination of syndrome. |

Dear Shmuel, Thank you for this information. I will certainly apply it with judgement to the case. The condition shows very empty fire pulses. HT, SI, TH, CX. A shingles like pain in the temporal region extending it seems along the route of the upper branch of the trigeminal. Loss of mobility and continence. I will keep you informed of the progress.

Dear Shmuel, I told you I would keep you informed of his progress. His treatment started with Laser to Ht-8. When I touched H-8 his comment was that hurts. I hot needled P-6 and moxa to Du4 and Du14 not enough in my opinion but there will be another occaision. My colleague lasered Bl62 Si3 and being a cupping master - cupped Bl13 etc. His improvement was immediate, standing and moving was improved, he was much more alert and slept through the night without having to get up and fall over 6 or 7 times. There is still a way to go but hope, improved spirits and quality of life have all benefited. I did not get to moxa the Ren meridian but hope this will happen next treatment.

Our patient is improving at an acceptable rate. He lives 100mile from me so getting the frequency of treatment is an issue. We walked him 1 Km after last week's treatment but he has a slight paresis of the left lower limb and more serious paralysis of left upper limb. His memory, albeit improving slowly is a mattar of great concern because a tumour placing pressure of the brain is high on the list of probable causes. Last week I used hot needles on S36 and the affected side reaction to Qi was as expected but the "healthy" side was very empty. Any suggestion would be greatfully considered. My patient has promised me much summoning of Qi if ever the tables are turned and I am on the table requiring Acupuncture treatment. :-).

The tumor issue is crucial here, and changes the diagnosis. You did not mention it before. Can it be seen in MRI or CT scan ? How is the inner coldness improving if at all ? |

Dear Shmuel, Thank you for your interest and support. Well I did use hot needle on Ren-5. I was absolutely sure I summond the Qi correctly and sealed the point after I exited. Well the feeling of Qi was so intense that for 3 days he felt the needle was still insitu. Then it settled, the coldness disappeared. He said to me today that after the coldness lifted he feals like "he can make it" for the first time. The pluses to date are that he is far more mobile so mobile that he is not considered a candidate for physiotherapy at the hospital - which is a shame because he does need to see gains being made on a daily basis. He is more alert. Able to carry on a "shop talk" conversation with me. Today I treateded Ren-12, Technique was insert needle set up a strong stimulation 3 clockwise 2 anticlockwise to the depth that the Qi is summoned. When the Qi is summoned the needle is pushed out to only about 3mm and the Qi grips the needle and will not let it go until it wants to. The whole lower and mid-abdomen visibly puslated. So Im confident the middle warmer will come on line. I supplemented this treatment with Li-4 Sp-6 combo to tone and strengthen the blood. This is where I need a little assistance becuase His B/P is high 200/110. I need to use stimulation but, at the same time use a technique to bring down the B/P so guidance will be favourably received and carefully considered, Please. His memory is extraordinary bad, but there is improvement. The paralysis of left arm is marked with pooling of fluids. His left leg needs coaching. But after a session of coaching he went off the day afterwards and walked the 1Km distance himself. YESS! I say well done. The symptoms of the Temporal arteritis are abating slowly. Now the issue of Cancer: I am 90% sure there is pressure/growth in the cranium. An MRI might become available by the end of the week. When the middle warmer comes on line there will be more decisions to be made. The Qi accumulation in the cranium, is prominent in my mind. So any and every suggestion would be carefully and gratefully considered.

G-20 + St-9 can reduce the cranial pressure, as well as the blood pressure. Just make sure you are familiar with the St-9 Renying insertion technique. It is considered a dangerous point. |

Would also add L-3 to the two above, as a combination for the same purpose. |

Shmuel, Thank you for your interest and suggestions in the treatment of my friend. I feel I should let you know the progress. After treating G-20 + St-9 the pulse became a lot softer. He slept well for 3 days. Because he has had very intermittent treatment I have given him homoeopatic remedies that give him the energy to heal. The RMI shows multiple infarcted areas, extensive white matter ischemic changes. I treatend him yesterday with Co4 Liv8 Cv12. He is now coherent enough to have a conversation and able to tell me that he was struck by lightening. Trauma enough to precipitate arteritis, raise vascular pressure and precipitate the multiple ischemic infarcts. His mobility takes him on a daily walk to the park about 2K away a walk around and back home. Which is excellent. Feeling has come back into his left arm but there is work to do to get motion back into it. Massage is enabling him to keep lymphatics and circulation somewhat normal. I have talked to him about scalp acupuncture as a possible next step. My plan is to place him on a rotating treatment plan using points that will assist in brain repatterning and enervation of left limbs. |

The heartbreaking thing is that I was unable to treat him on an hourly and daily basis, so have lost valuable ground. I thank you for your suggestions of the past and would welcome any in the future by any member of the forum as I am committed to treating him until he recovers more or dies peacefully. Just to clarify details of the CT Scan: Discrete infarcts in both frontal lobes, centrum semiovale, l external capsule, r internal capsule, l thalamus. Some basal ganglia ectasia. Jan. |

Haven't seen patient in 2 weeks but continues to improve. Has walked 7 blocks and is now challenging his girlfriend to running race. A point of interest during examination is LR-2 Xingjian. It has an interesting Ashi quality about it. Very precise, very round, very painful. Searching your dBase has thrown up 3 very interesting formulas. Emaciation KI-1 Glaucoma (he certainly has issues with his eyes) and urinary retention. I would be interested in any good formulas that revolve around LR-2. Once again thank you for your support, inspiration and most importantly keeping the traditional classical acupuncture to a high standard yet lucid and accessible. You don't just have a resource here - you have a goldmine. |

Improvement has stopped and Tom is now hospitalised. The frequency of treatment was the heartbreaking issue here. Given good, consistent acupuncture he would have continued to improve and regain vital skills that were let go over the 12 months of total neglect. Now the family has the chore of pushing him round in a wheelchair. Still we assisted him to retain his sense of humour and personality. The last treatment that I think we will be involved in - besides the points for Apoplexy I used Ren-17 to strengthen the life force generally. |

I recieved notification that Tom was buried last week. This case remindes me of a line in the prayer of Maimonides "In the sufferer let me see only the human being." I and my Colleague saw that and were able to act decisively and effectiely because of our training in acupuncture. I am convinced he had world's best practice, but the frequency of treatment was simply socially and economically out of our reach. He paid us a great compliment. The evening before his death, when we visited, he opened up and showed us his full personality, for a couple of hours. We all had a real ball. When we left he was under no illusions. He had a couple of hours with his son, we are told, he did not open up to anyone else and died soon after. It was thanks to acupuncture, I believe, that his personality and sense of humour was maintained to the end. There was absolutely no clouding or stupefying of his consciousness when he died. He is the only acupuncturist, I know, to have given acupuncture to a echidna :-)). "Don't look for me in the dust, but in the hearts of the living." |
