Cholesterol is a chemical substance and as such it is not recognized in classical Chinese medicine theories. Nevertheless, people who suffer from hyper-cholestrolemia usually present symptoms and signs typical to some syndromes recognized by Chinese medicine. These syndromes often correlates with liver/Gb imbalances, or blood stasis and phlegm anomalities. Treatment is directed toward these syndromes in order to re-establish equilibrium. It usually bears a significant effect on the blood serum cholesterol as well. It is not a sin, however, to make use of our modern understanding of the pathogenesis of hypercholestrolemia and offer our patients a "modern" advice about proper diet and lifestyle for this problem.

I have read a lot about different herbs that can lower cholesterol, especially bad cholesterol. Do you have here any suggestion for a particular herb or substance that can do the job instead of taking the anti-statins regular medicine which is harmful for the liver?
thx, David.

Hi David. There is evidence, as well as my personal experience with my patients, that red yeast rice can do the job as well as the conventional medication for this problem. Other researches indicate that pomegranate extract in capsules are also effective for this. Various herbs which are used in the Chinese materia medica are known to lower the bad holesterol, but are probably less common in health food stores than the two mentioned above. If other forum-members can add to this list, I'll be happy to hear.
