Hi Guys! Despite the funny title, this thread is actually quite serious. I have a patient, a sixty year-old lady. She has a history of both duodenal ulcer, for which she continues to take a pill, and hiatus hernia, for which she takes an other pill. She also takes a lightweight anti-depressant. She recently gave up smoking, having smoked for over forty years at a steady forty cigarettes a day (hooray for acupuncture!) OK, now here's the rub: today she told me about a strange thing that happened to her. She went to the loo yesterday. She felt that there was something different with the stool. She said that it felt fibrous or stringy, so much so that she felt she had to help the stool out of her anus with her hand. What she found that there was a section of the stool that was white, and indeed fibrous. She said that it looked as if she had just passed a piece of intestine, or the skin of a sausage. It was perhaps 2-3 inches long. It was white, and quite distinct and separate in nature from the surrounding fecal matter, which was the usual brown colour and of normal consistency. She said that this was not the first time this had happened, and that it had happened perhaps an other two times in the course of the last year. That night, she had very bad epigastric / hypochondrial pain that stopped her from sleeping. What is going on? Does anyone have the faintest idea what this white material in her feces could be? Lunch on me for the best answer!! Simon |

This type of stories in my opinion should be ruled out for intestinal worms ,tenia, ascaris and other species that grow in the intestine and could be indeed be seen with a naked eye. Some of these species could grow to a huge size that could even obstruct the intestine.Stool culture will give a definete answer. |

Completely agree with Dr. Kabbara. Smokers, because are imbibing a toxic substance, can co-exist with some low creatures that would knock around a person who does not imbibe toxicities. Jan |
