I have had some good results with regard to pain around the joints. The problem is that the swelling does not seem to come down. Sometimes I feel that my patients are more concerned about this that the initial pain. Is there a point(s) that I can use especially around the ankles and knees to reduce any swelling. |

Applying acupuncture to points around the affected joint, usually reduce the swelling and the pain altogether. Most joints have what we call "cluster points" that are chosen in case of arthritis, or pain from a different etiology. These are points situated around the joint and have a proved strong influence over that joint. E.g., Sp-5/ St-41/ G-40 for ankle pain and swelling. In order to reduce the swelling as well, one must use quite a vigorous reducing technique so as to invigorate the flow of Qi and blood and disperse the swelling. |

I would suggest trying direct moxa and needle to any of the following: KI 7, SP 6, SP 9, Ren 4, Ren 5, Ren 6, and Ren 9; depending on the presentation of the patient. (Try to use only 1-2 points, think Hua Tuo.) Provided you have inspected the area affected for heat/cold/pitting, palpated the abdomen and pulse, and inspected the tongue. I wish you success in your treatments, Eric
