Hello all. I have a constant constipation, like one bowel movement in 7 days or more. I have been advised to do regular enemas or colonic irrigations. Some doctors say that it will make my bowels lazy and aggravate the condition. Any advice please?

Since constipation can be due to a lot of things you will need to do some
research to find out what might be the cause for you. That being said
constipation is also a major symptom of magnesium deficiency so you might
want to evaluate your diet with that in mind. Also, how much fiber do you
get in your diet? Try evaluating any foods you know that loosen your bowels
for what they might have in common as that information could help you
determine what the cause of the constipation might be. You might want to
investigate the herbal combination called Triphala. Make sure you stay well
hydrated. You can also consider massaging your belly.

You also need to understand that this information is given as a starting
point for you to do some research. No one can diagnose and treat without
doing a full intake.

I wish you well in your research and hope that you will find a solution.

Constipation, chronic or acute, responds terrifically well to Chinese acupuncture, especially in young adults. Thus, if you wish to resolve this problem altogether, I definitely suggest that you find yourself an experienced practitioner and have some treatments for this problem.
As for the enema question Sean, I don't think that it'll make your bowels "lazy" in any way, unless you are going to use this procedure instead of the "natural" way. Enemas have been used by mankind since olden times, especially as a mean of cleansing and purification. The Essenes, a Jewish cult that existed in the Judean desert in the times of Christ, were used to perform (privately of course) regular enemas as a mean of purification. This they did with hollow reeds of bulrush. Also the Hindu Yogi cults have been known to routinely perform enemas as a mean of cleansing the inner parts of the body. This they did (and still do) by training their abdominal and pelvis muscles to pump in river or lake water while sinking their lower half in the water.
In our modern culture, the technique of colonic irrigation has spread out some 20 years ago. By this technique, people are having this "heavy" enema performed on them in a clinic that specializes in this field, as well as operating a rather complex machinery (at least in comparison with the gentle procedures discussed above...).
My own view, is that colonic irrigation should be undertaken only in rare and isolated occasions, and by people with specific medical necessity for this kind of therapy. As opposed to that, I am quite in favor with routinely having this procedure done for oneself, as a mean of inner cleansing and self preservation - prophylactic, if you wish, against colonic cancer or other maladies. I don't see much difference in doing this or the more "popular" nasal irrigation...
There are actually two ways that you can do it yourself, without the help of a colonic institute..
You can buy a simple plastic enema and perform the task as explained in the broschure enclosed with it, or as explained by the pharmacist.
The second, much more convenient, is simply squat in your bath tube and open the dush shower hose with warm water. Then push it strongly to your anus and loosen your rectal muscles. Let the water flow in to your capacity, hold your muscle and jump over to the toilets to empty yourself. This may be done several times until you feel completely clean inside.
Medically speaking, I think this procedure, if done occasionally, has a great prophylactic value - especially for middle aged people and above.

Hello,
I would be very careful about inserting a shower hose into one's anus. Some
people are not very aware of their bodies and could do harm to the mechanism
of the anal ligaments and/or rectum. Also, shower hoses vary in diameter,
material and cleanliness... all of which need to be considered as does water
pressure.

I am not a big proponent of colonics unless they are absolutely necessary.
The anus was designed mechanically to let things out not take things in. I
have had a few and there is more to them than just injecting water.
Positioning is very important and changes throughout the procedure. Also
involved is gentle Hara massage to help loosen and move things along.

I have lived with someone who ruptured a diverticuli and the surgery
required going in through the anus. Because of the stretching of the anus
during the surgical repair they were left unable to completely control their
bowels for the rest of their lives.

There are Chinese Herbal Formulas designed to clean the colon. I would
recommend that you find a good Chinese herbalist and speak with them about
this if it is something you want to pursue.

Enemas and colonics will also not correct the cause of the constipation.
They only treat the branch and not the root.

Just some things to consider.

Of course P.T., I did not say insert the shower hose in to your anus, rather simply attach it or join it outside this area so that only the water flows in. God forbid... do NOT insert

...and some more clarifications in response to some requests. The technique is to press the shower sprinkler attached to the hose, to the anal region and relax the muscles there. Thus, you allow warm water to flow in until your belly feels full to its capacity. Then, go and empty yourself at the toilet. Do not try to insert anything, including a hose inside the anus.. Hope this is all clear now.
