The sequence of needling in acupuncture is very important, in some cases imperative. It sometimes gives a direction to the whole treatment and causes energetical propagation in the direction desired by the practitioner. Of less importance, if at all, is the sequence of removal of the needles, despite the fact that some trends in acupuncture regard it as equally important. This is not so in my experience.
When there is no specific energetical movement intended by the practitioner, the classics advise the following needle insertion to be taken:
First needle the upper portions of the body and advance downward.
First needle the back and then the abdomen.
First puncture the hands and then the legs.
These are general rules.
Despite this, it is the choice of the practitioner in any given treatment to prefer the right needling sequence in accordance with the diagnosis and the rules of acupuncture.
Thus, in Yin deficiency of the upper parts of the body, the proper sequence would be to start with the lower Yin points such as Sp-6/ Ki-6/ Ki-1/ etc., and proceed in an upward direction to Ren-4/ Ren-12/ Ren-22 and the like.
