Dear Dr Shmuel What is a pericardial effusion from a TCM point of view? Can it be cured by either acupuncture or TCM antibiotics formulae ? What kind of food is recommended in such a situation? Some times ago, I had called upon you for a strange high fever and strep-throat that was afflicting my son and his girlfriend. After much struggle and various examinations, he was recently diagnosed with what seems to be a pericardial effusion . Exams are still going on. he was also found positive for a chlamedia . he took one week antibiotics (minocyclin) for this external problem. Remain the heart and his extreme fatigue. Could it be all related? I am looking forward to your answer, Regards, Ann.

Hi Ann, yes, I remember your post about your son. Pericardial effusion is an excess fluid between the heart and the pericardium and may be due to various causes. In Ch.med proper there is no such condition, yet, symptoms associated with this condition may point to either heart or pericardium disorders. If this condition involves fever, fatigue, chest pain + cardiac symptoms such as tachycardia, cyanosis etc., it is probably related to a condition known as rheumatic fever attacking the heart/pericardium. In many instances though, pericardial effusion is without specific symptoms and may be detected by pulse diagnosis taken by an experienced Ch. Dr. Acupuncture may be very very effective for this problem, but only if done by a very experienced practitioner. Otherwise, Ch. herbology should be applied and also by a very good practitioner. If you go to either a herbalist or a practitioner of acupuncture, he'll also guide you about other considerations such as diet and behavior. These instructions will depend on the Ch. diagnosis of the disease and not on the Western diagnosis. |
