Hi, what are the best points to treat pain in the knee by acupuncture and I would also like to ask what are the main syndrome differentiations for this problem. |

Wow, this alone can be a topic for an article.. I'll try to summerize it in short. Main points are always the couple St-35/Xiyan. Other points are chosen related to the syndrome differentiation: Traumatic injury/blood stasis: points on the meridian traversing the site of the injury. I.e., medial aspect of knee Sp-6, etc. Damp bi, add: Sp-6, Sp-9, Li-4, Li-11 etc. Weak ligaments, add: G-34, Liv-8 Heat in the blood, Damp-Heat - rheumatoid arthritis, add: B-40 (weizhong), Sp-10, Sp-6, Sp-5, Li-4, Li-11 Blood letting, etc. Damp-Cold, or Cold, add: Li-4, St-36, Sp-6, Ren-4, 6 and use moxa on various points. Whenever there is pain which is in most cases the combination of Li-4 and Sp-5 is helpful.

Can I chime in on this one? I also learned what are called "Bachmann's Points" around the knee or other joint. Basically the joint is surrounded like in "surrounding the dragon." So the points would be at the superior edge of the patella (off of the bone,) the inferior edge of the patella (through the tendon, if the knee is semi-flexed like over a large bolster there will be no tension,) and at the 3 o'clock and 9 o'clock positions at the lateral and medial edges of the patella, and one final point at the center of the patella or which ever joint one is working on. Five moxa cones are directly burned on the point in a cross pattern (12 o'clock, center, 6 o'clock, 9 o'clock, and then 3 o'clock in that order) and repeated for each point for a total of 25 moxa cones that are about 40 mm in diameter and 50 mm tall. Then the points are pierced with a 36 guage needle with a quick tonifying action, in and out in about 5-10 seconds. This method works great in my clinic as far as dealing with pain. Then, the work of balancing the organs and 5 Phases is essential to make the treatments last. |
