hi Shmuel,
To what extent can acupuncture treat high blood preasure.?and what is the strategy and pt combination?
Another question I have, ( sorry to be a nudj), how do you treat severe lumbar disc/vertebra degeneration, with extreme pain in the legs as a major symptom.
thanks
boaz

Greetings Boaz. Acupuncture can cure hypertension in some cases, or only ameliorate the symptoms and lower the pressure - depending on the duration of the disorder and on other factors such as: age, general health, etc.
The strategy, as is always the case, to differentiate what causes the HBP. Most often it is due to exuberant liver Yang, but occasionally it may be due to K. Yin or even Yang Xu, but most often to weak K Qi. These syndromes give substantially different sets of symptoms and/or signs, and care must be taken not to lower liver Yang when the case is weak K qi... lest an aggrevation of the condition may occur. Sometimes the HBP is due to blood vessel congestion (even hyper/Shi Yin condition !), heart Qi xu or heart Yin xu or heart fire exubrerance. Even a spleen Yang xu condition, or lung Qi xu may cause accumulation of fluid-Yin in the body in a way that pressure rises. If this is the case, do not even attempt to play with liver Yang...
The most significant sign in my opinion, is the color of the inner skin of the eye lid. When hypertension exists and the inner lower lid is extremely red and congested, the condition of your patient is dangerous. If, HBP exist but the inner lid's color is normal - there is usually no danger in this condition. Symtomatically, even ear acupuncture is helpful in lowering HBP. Still, I prefer acupuncture in order to resolve the problem altogether when possible.

Sorry, forgot about this. Basically, the same as a regular low back pain and sciatica. We have discussed this already on this forum. The disc degeneration causes inflammation due to excessive fraction and this is the cause of the pain. After the basic symptoms of pain and sciatica have diminished, you may center your efforts on preventive measures. These may be herbs that strengthen and regulate the lumbar region and resolve damp-bi and stagnant blood, moderate physical excercise for the lower back, shiazu, etc.

thanks for the great answer,
how would you explain in tcm that salt is not good for hbp?
you say that the most common reason for hbp is liv yang shi, I really rarly see these types of patients, with red eyes and face, outbursts of anger, dizziness , etc. What are the clinical symptoms you see in most hbp patients ?What pts do you find most effective?
thanks ( alot )}}

Also in TCM it is often mentioned that too much salt:
1. damages the blood
2. weakens the kidneys
You may well remember that salt is the flavor associated with the kidney. Too much of this flavor damages the kidneys, as much as too much of the sweet flavor damages the spleen/pancreas. Also when HBP is due to liver Yang the main cause is weak kidney Qi or Yin. This is what actually "unleashes" liver Yang.
Apart from this, salt is known to cause accumulation of fluid, both in China and the West alike. This congests Yin-fluid in the vessels and, as you know, blood is an extension of Yin.
When liver Yang Shi pattern exists in your patient, the symptoms that you mention may or may not exist. But, pulse and/or tungue qualities always exist. Look for those. In liver Yang exuberance hypertension type, use:
Li-4/ Li-11/ G-20/ Taiyang/ Liv-3/ Liv-2/ G-38

If you have experience with this point, use also St-9.
Plus, points according to symptoms.

The normal range is between 120X80 and 140X90. There is a tendency in males over 45 to an increased B/P. Still, going above 140X90 needs an investigation in order to determine what is the cause and attempting to lower it to a normal condition.

I was shown in the internal med. department in china that when prescribing herbs to patients with high BP, in the absence of red eyelids or congested eyes, eye disturbances etc, the most significant factor to look at is the tongue body, if the tongue body is red, dark red and congested looking, then its a good idea to get WM antihypertensive treatment and definitely avoid herbs that are hot in nature, if its pale or dull red then this can be ok and treatable.
In any case, I would get an MD monitoring the case, unless its borderline hypertension, and even then its still a good idea. Just for everybodies peace of mind.

You are quite right about this Bun. I should only add that, apart from the lids shape and color mentioned above, the tongue lower surface is of a greater significance. Those who have both red-purple tongue color as well as bulging and congested looking veins on the lower surface of the tongue, are considerably at a higher risk. Since most dangerous outcomes of H.B.P. are related to liver Yang or Wind turning wild, people must be strongly advised not to get angry at any cost. I even do my best to actually intimidate them into not getting angry at any cost. You can see my article on the eye hemorrhage case at:
http://www.acumedico.com/eye1.htm
as an example of what may happen when anger is involved with hypertension...

Hi Deb,
I strongly recommend that you look for an experienced Ch. med practitioner and let him check you thoroughly. You have quite a few problems that may have a common root that need to be identified and treated. This can be done only by undergoing a complete diagnosis procedure by a qualified practitioner.

It does, in people who already suffer from high BP. Even so, not in all types of hypertension and not in all patients. Those who suffer from hypertension related to excessive liver yang or heart fire syndromes should refrain from spicy food. Also those who have the yin deficiency hypertension type, may react badly to spicy food.
Yet, those who have the excess yin or phlegm type hypertension with yang deficiency may benefit from spicy food for their type hypertension.

Acupuncture is the treatment of choice for severe (or not) lower back pain. As for the HBP, it may happen for various reasons, of which pain, anxiety and nervous tension are only few. Take a rest and relax until tomorrow and consult your acupuncturist about this. Usually, for severe back pain, treatment is administered daily in order to bring quick relief of pain. I suppose that your acupuncturist will want to address the blood pressure problem as well on the next session.
