Hello A.O. Please follow the link here, I have already responded to this question elsewhere. 78 years old or younger - the same treatment. Just make sure to tailor the amount of stimulation to the patient's tolerance and general constitution. http://www.acumedico.com/discus/messages/21/205.html |

In such a case you must let him lie on his side and insert the needles also in points: G-29 and St-31/ 33 etc. If you choose the right posture for the patient, you can treat points both on the back as well as on the front at the same time. |

One of my patients suffering from sciatica express severe pain while connected to electroacupuncture stimulation and stops pain 5 minutes after disconnection. He is resistent to routine sciatica treatment (acupuncture) too. Is there any recommendations from the colleguews in this respect ? |

Yes indeed. Cupping is sometimes excellent for this problem, in severe cases use blood-cupping. Another excellent solution is direct moxibustion. This will inevitably leave scars on the skin, but it is even superior to acupuncture in very hard cases. |

However one of my patients had considerable improvement of his sciatical pain (his pain was only at sleeping times) during 20 treatment sessions 2-3/wk, the pain came back after a 2-week gap. What do you suggest in this case ? |

If the pain recurs one should continue with acupuncture until there is a full recovery. Sometimes, you need to keep treating the Ben even after the Biao subsides. E.G., a kidney yang deficiency, or spleen Qi or yang deficiency, or wind-cold at the level of the vertebrae, etc. This includes changes in life style that contribute to the problem. I.e., if kidney yang is indeed the problem, refrain from excessive sex or from cold beverages, appropriate physical exercise, eating habits...and so on. |
