Hello Yarden. Gas in the digestive system, or borborygmus - intestinal noise, may be the result of several possible syndromes. It may be due to insufficiency of the spleen energy that fails to apply proper digestion and/or movement of the digested food in the intestines. This improper transformation/transportation activity of the spleen may produce gas, tummy ache, loose stools etc. Sometimes, this spleen deficiency may "invite" an over-abundance of liver Qi activity (as liver-wood controls spleen-earth) to penetrate into the spleen's energy domain and further disrupt the digestive process. When this phenomenon happens, there will be severe tummy ache along with gas and borborygmus, heartburn and nausea, etc. Even excessive dampness due to spleen Qi deficiency which usually leads to loose srtools or diarrhea, may cause borborygmus and gas. In many occasions, syndromes such as blood stasis, whether in the stomach or the large intestine, may also cause gas, as well as other syndromes. It is very important to run a meticulous differential diagnosis and then apply the required treatment.

The smell alone does not indicate whether there is heat involved or not. There are other symptoms and signs indicative of heat or dampness or cold. As for your other question, it is very often seen in the case of spleen deficiency that the stomach is over heated. If this is the case, the heat involved is a pathogenic heat and eliminating it will only help the spleen energetical functioning. Eliminating pathogenic heat from the stomach does not mean that it affects spleen Yang Qi adversely.
