Hi Shmuel,
How do you approach craving for sweats? Not overweight or menstrating women, but a good health man, who's only complaint is craving and overeating sweets. This is very disturbing since he is also a dentist......

If the pulse doesn't reveal any special tendencies such as Sp xu or other disharmonies, is it possible that this man has psychological inhibitions that may cause this craving?

yes, this is what i suspect, but I cannot put my finger on it. There is a slight spxu, only by the tongue shape ( little swolen, and slightly thin greasy coating). Symptomwize he has no complaints at ALL, besides cold hands, which took me a while to find out, he is not cooperative not because he is rude but he hasn't much too say, " all is fine ". The pulse shows no abnormalities. So I do feel there is some psychological aspect here.
Iv'e tried ear pts such as shen men and st, and my initial program of treatment was to tonify Sp. using pts such as Sp 3,8 St 36.
No responce at all after 5 treatments.

I was interested to see where this thread was going, so please forgive my non-professional observations. Have you thought about inquiring about this dentist’s other dietary tendencies - such as, does he eat large quantities of protein rich food at a main meal which would encourage a sugar craving to compensated and balanced the meal. There again, maybe he is just sweetening his day and reliving work related stress as a dentist (dentistry is known to a particularly stressful occupation).

The detrimental effects of highly refined sugars on the teeth are obviously well known to dentists but are the effects of excesses sugar intake on the body as a whole known to this gentleman, which might then curb his craving (or there again worsen it with more stress)? Anyway, if there is an easy answer for intermittent sugar craving, then, if we are honest with ourselves, I and the vast majority of the civilized human race would be interested in knowing how to curb it. It always strikes me as a built-in defect of nature that babies, in their pristine, unpolluted innocence, just adore sugars.

hi sidney,
His diet is well balanced, and he is quite aware of himself, this is why this craving bothers him so much. His craving is not only to sugers ( but mostly), he feels he cannot stop himself even when feeling full, he cannot open a cookie package and not finish it. I do feel that his craving is stress/mentally related. Craving for sugers can be because of liver qi not flowing freely and thus the suger relaxes this ( like in PMS women), or because of spleen deficiency, and thus sweet ( being the taste of the earth element), gives a feeling of tonification, though actually this depletes the spleen even more. Sweet relaxes the flow of qi in the body, that is why we love it, but too much relaxed qi movment is already weekness.....

Hi Boaz,

Thanks for your most interesting response. However, once again here are my thoughts as a non-professional with a chronic sweet-tooth.

I know, as I am sure most of us do, those days when nothing will help and we go on a binge of carbohydrates. And the "why" to my mind is always “stress” in one form or another. In fact, a relaxation of a stressful situation is also problematic, where we feel a need to compensate ourselves for having survived the moment. There is little rationality to physical craving.

I humbly suggested that the way out of this vicious circle is not to try and pick oneself up by one's bootlaces which create even more stress and consequently food craving and other compensating destructive behavior. Rather one should accept that harmful habits are detrimental to one's health. We have inner strength if we go in search of it through meditation - passive or meditative movement (TM, Tai Chi, Qi-Gong and Yoga) that can help create a more positive self-image.

And with sugar, like alcohol to an alcoholic, it’s always that first drink (taste) that does it. So that is one thing to watch for if possible.

And when we do “sin” … we can always admit to being human and vulnerable, convince ourselves that these foods are totally disgusting, admit that we are no longer an infant, suggest to one self that we do not need a crutch to survive; or we can simply take another slice of cake and say, “to hell with it”. And, yes, it is worth while considering that it is also good to feel physically well, energetic, comfortable and in good health. I most certainly agree before it is said, that all of the above is easier said than put into practice.

Worry. According to the sources worry is attributed to Tai Yin. worry cause morbid anger, cold limbs fullness of energy causing upward pressure. In old China this was believed to be the disease of rich people who over ate rich fatty foods. Worry will cause a blockage in the middle Jiao cutting the communication between the three Jiaos. Worry is also connected to the colon, probable because anxiety/worry through the correlation between lu/co disturbs the elimination function of the colon and disturbs the normal descending function of the lungs.

From this developed the idea that worry coagulates the consciousness so that the body can't function. Excess worry will cause harm to the sentiment because the spleen is the store of the sentiment. Some backgroung reading. However you might dig a bit more deeper about his emotional well being.Another way is pensiveness and thinking when balanced is our tool to concentrate consciouness in order to consider ideas. it is the way in which we consider and integrate life's experiences. it is said that excess thinking, excess study , obsessive thinking and worry injure the spleen and may depress the functions of transformation and transportation involved in the digestion. Also over thinking may concentrate the intellect in one's own problems giving rise to obsession. To get the Qi moving again, physical activity is a way to go and dig a bit deeper. Let me know how you get on.
