Hi, I know that acupuncture is probably the best cure for a dislocated disc, lower back pain and sciatica. I only don't understand how it works, does the disc slips back to its original location? Any magic involved? Thanks, neil.

No magic involved, Neil, despite the fact that people who suffer from the pain involved in this problem usually get cured and feel as if they have been helped by magic. It's a well known fact that many people have a slipped disc on their spine (usually the lower back) but they are unaware of it. Yet, in many ocassions it does cause tremendous pain, immobility and even paralysis of limbs. The cause for these symptoms is not the disc per-se rather the pressure that it applies on the nerves, ligaments and tissues around the involved vertebrae. This pressure, especially when abrupt and acute, ruptures tiny cells of nerves and tissue, cause local edema, pressure and inflammation (no micro-pathogens involved). This results in an area of increasing stagnation, impeding the flow of blood and energy and inhibits the functioning of the sciatic nerve. As a result, local pain in the lower back usually develops into severe pain (or numbness) in the muscles supplied by this sciatic nerve, along its course down the leg. Acupuncture re-establishes adequate circulation in these areas of stagnation, disperses edematous tissues, lessens the pressure thereby relieves the inflammation and pain. Having treated hundreds of cases of lower back pain and sciatica in the course of many years, i think that if applied properly with good needle technique, no other therapy (including osteopathy or chiropractice) can match acupuncture efficacy in the treatment of this syndrome. |

hi again, I've heard many practitioners speak of "placing the disc back ", in other words through manipulation the disc goes back to its normal structure. Is this possible? In clinic I too, try too make the blood and qi circulation back to harmony and reduce pain, though I do not think the disc goes back into its normal possition.I am at mind, that as long there is normal flow of qi/blood, there will be no pain.Is placing the disc back possible? |

Placing the disc back is possible sometimes, when there is no disc rupture, only a slipped disc. When there is a rupture, the problem is more severe and can not be corrected by Tuina or chiropractice. Still, efficient acupuncture usually resolves these conditions by dispersing the accumulation of fluid and resolving the inflammation at the site of the disc. When the local pressure and inflammation is relieved, the involved merves can function better and transmit the nervous electricity to the muscles of the buttocks and leg. |

As it says here and elsewhere on this forum Singey, acupuncture is probably the best modality available for the treatment of slipped or protruding disc and sciatica. Please run a search for these words in the forum and you'll find plenty of information. After that, if you have specific queries, please post them here and I shall do my best to answer them. |

It can also be useful to have somebody trained in the technique apply some traction to increase the intervertebral disc space and reduce pressure. (Used in conjunction with acupuncture of course.) |
