Hello. What would your advice be to someone who'd like to investigate acupuncture self-treatment? I don't know much about acupuncture theory specifics, but I know my body pretty well. For example I'm pretty good at some kind of acupressure/massage thing and know for example about trigger points. And as I know a lot of tender points in my body and have some kind of feel about the meridians, I thought that experimenting with inserting needles in these tender points would be of help. What do you people say? Is there any way I could harm myself? Obviously I would only stick to points which don't have any physical risks... |

I am an acupunturist and I tryed to needle myself. However, I find it not very effective. First of all you can only needle points on the legs and front torso and one hand. It is very akward to needle the points on the right hand after I put the needles to the left one and vice versa. Also you have to manipulate the needle to obtain Qi sensation or release trigger point( it kind of jumpy and intensive feeling if you do it right). I beleive the most effective treatment should be done by another person. Have you seen surgeons who does surgeries on themselves or dentists fixing their own teeth? It is possible to certain extend, but would it be much better if other professional do that for you? I beleive that there should be some exchange of Qi and intention to get the best results. By the way which points are you going to needle, what kind and lenght of needles are you going to use? What depth of insertion? How you are going to manipulate needles? Just sticking the needle to sensitive points on the body is not going to get results unless you know what you doing in terms of right needling technique and point locations. I do not do it myself anymore and I would not recommend you to do self treatment with needles if you do not have appropriate acupuncture training and experience. Better self treat yourself with your hands and fingers. |

I definitely agree with Yuly on this. Self treatment with needles can be executed only by professionals who have substantial knowledge of acupuncture. As Yuly said, the experience may be awkward, painful, ineffective and sometimes harmful. Why not start with self-treatments techniques such as the one delineated in my book: Chopsticks Acupuncture? It is both very effective, painless and harmless. Acupuncture is invasive and touches considerable energetical mechanisms in the body that may have a great influence on your well-being - for better or worse. Do not regard it too suprficially. |
