How deep is this point punctured? Is it retained or withdrawn after insertion ? |

This depends... For recent events of coughing with phlegm, for mild cases of Wind-Cold-Damp, or for children, the insertion is quite shallow. Usually half a cun. For cases of protracted asthma, difficult breathing or plenty of Damp-Phlegm, the needle insertion may be 1-1.5 cun. It is important to remember that Tiantu is considered a somewaht "dangerous" point. Needle handling must be meticulous and the needle must be delivered tangent to the posterior wall of the sternum. The needle maybe retained in place during the whole treatment unless it causes discomfort (or fear) to the patient. In children, the needle may be withdrawn after Deqi. |
