St-9 is indeed included in the list of dangerous points in acupuncture. Yet, it is also a very powerful point in the adjustment of blood-pressure and restraining pain. It is located medial (1 cun) to Li-18 some 0.5 cun deep inside the lateral border of Adam's apple in the neck. While puncturing it, one must palpate the carotid artery with the other hand and push it slightly laterally while inserting the needle with the other hand. Deqi must be felt in the area of insertion and traveling either proximally or distally. More experienced practitioners can make the Qi propagate to the desired direction. |
