in my qigong class and kung fu class we're taught to start with our left side, that this is yang and right is yin, and we always start with yang. but there are a couple small moves that our reversed between the men and women. for instance, when we hold our hands over our dan tien, the men hold left over right(yang over yin), the women are told to hold right over left. it's the same switch when we sit cross-legged. my question is are women the opposite of men. is there right side yang and left side yin. if so, should they to start with their yang side first? |

There are some threads concerning this topic already in the forum. In Chinese medicine, Yang is said to originate in the right side and flow to the left, and Yin qi - the opposite. Yet, this perception is not shared by all scholars of Chinese medicine throughout the ages. Some consider that Yang chi stems from the left side whilst Yin chi - the opposite. Clinical experience, in my opinion at least, demonstrates that Yang originates on the right side but tends to stagnates (in case of excess) on the left side. The opposite applies, of course, to Yin. However, there is no evidence that the opposite applies to women. This idea is peculiar to esoteric streams in Chinese thought, and as far as I know, widely adopted in Japan and the West. In clinical practice, however, I never found any support to this notion. I suppose that this idea stems from the conception that because a female is Yin in nature, the energy flows in an opposite direction than in men. In any event, and even if this was the case, I see little significance - if at all - in the manner in which the two sexes apply their hand or legs postures. Looks a little farfetched, don't you agree ? |

Hi Chris and Shmuel, Somehow when Chris started this thread, it had gotten my e-mail address involved and I received his post, and also received Shmuels response to that post. If Admin could be so helpful as to guide Chris through the proper channels for posting so I won't receive further e-mails on this topic it would be appreciated. Thanks Have a blessed day, Jim |
