Hi Shmuel (and other members), Is there a connection between taichi and acupuncture? Are the two related in any way to each other? |

Not quite with acupuncture Migdali, rather, definitely, with Chinese medical philosophy, especially the patterns of the flow of Qi in the body. The Dantian, the major Qi reservoir in the body below the navel, plays a central role in Tai chi postures, breathing and concentration. Yet, some acupuncture points are being used also in martial arts, as weak points, in order to cause extreme pain or disability to the oponent. Tai chi being also a martial art takes advantage of this knowledge, as well as other martial arts such as Ninjustsu, Aikido and others. |

There is a liberal sprinkling of self-administered acupressure throughout the Sun Style Tai Chi Form, which emphasises the link with TCM as a theory which underlies and informs Tai Chi practice. There are many examples, such as in a posture called 'Defending the Back' one connects the knuckle of the middle finger to Shen Ting on the Du Channel and the knuckle of the right thumb to CV 4. The most obvious connection with Acu. and Tai Chi would be the Taoist vision of Yang Sheng, the system of life nourishing practices, which included diet/nutrition, herbal supplements, exercise(Chi Kungs), physical manipulations ( An Mo, Tui Na)and Acupuncture/Pressure. As a means to be healthier and longlived to maximise time and energy for spiritual purposes. |
