I recently changed a Tai Chi club after moving to another town. This new one is a Yang style while i was practicing Wu style. My new sifu keeps us practicing high kicks while standing as long as we can on one leg. he says this posture is very good for balance and stregthens our postures. Practicing in Wu style my sifu used to say that Tai Chi is fluid and we should NOT remain in one posture without moving to the next continuously... Any thoughts about this seemingly contradiction? |

It is true that Tai Chi (of any style) should be ptacticed with flowing movements, one movement following the previous without "freezing" in one or another posture for the sake of calisthenics or acrobatics. Yet, that doesn't mean that in order to improve your acrobatics or flexibility you can not work specifically on certain postures that improve your general ability. You need to regard this workout as Qi Gong practice or simple calisthenics. Your teacher probably aims at improving your general physical ability so that your overall performance will improve. That said, you are still right that while practicing the forms of tai Chi your movements must be flowing and harmonious without remaining in frozen postures throughout the whole performance. |
