The translation of Qi gong is :manipulation of the Qi. Under Qi gong you may find breathing excercises, massaging techniques and movement excercises. The general aim of theses manipulations is to excercise, harmonize and activate the Qi in a specific area or meridian. Tai Ji, on the other hand, is more comoplex and it translates: the extreme or highest Qi fist. Fist goes for Chuan which must actually be: Tai Ji Quan (Tai Chi Chuan). Tai Ji is a set of slow-motion movements performed in silence and deep breathing and concentration. Its aim is to coordinate body and mind, enhance the free flow of Qi throughout the body, develop good concentration and memory and strengthen the muscles and ligaments. Devoted practitioners of Tai Chi say that its influence go even much beyond these... Since you can read Hebrew Peter, I can forward you to an article about Tai Chi which I wrote some years ago, if you are interested. Here's the link: http://www.acumedico.com/taichi.htm |

There's another difference between the two practices which may be mentioned. Tai chi is also a martial art, and there are specific combat techniques peculiar to this style. In Chinese it is called a "soft" martial art in contrast with Kung Fu which is a "hard" combat style. Qi Gong, on the other hand, is merely a "health" practice that has nothing to do with martial art. |
