Hello everybody,
spring is here, and hayfever is probably a major concern also in your acupuncture clinic. I wonder what might be your views as to how to classify this disorder in Chinese medicine terms or pathologies. Also, how do you personally treat this nuisance by acupuncture...

Hayfever as a phenomenon has the major characteristic of Wind. It causes itchy eyes and throat, running nose, sneezing, itchy ears and high irritation. It is sometimes combined with heat pathogen and many times with cold pathogen. The discrimination between them usually relates to the shape and color of the secretions. A purulent, viscous and sticky yellow nasal discharge + fast pulse and red tongue usually mark a combination of wind-damp-heat in the context of hayfever. A clear, transparent and fluid nasal discharge along with the appropriate tongue and pulse signs point out a wind-damp-cold condition.
The treatment is aimed at clearing the wind as the first effort and then the dampness and either heat or cold.
I usually puncture Li-4 and 11 in dispersion while the patient lies in prone position and then proceed with Du-14/ Bl-12/13 and 60.
For heat predominance I put an extra stimulous on Li-11 and Du-14 and add Gb-20.
For cold predominance I usually add moxa on Du-14 B-12 and add K-3 and Ren-4.
In most cases I add a second phase to the treatment after some 15-20 minutes. The patient turns to a supine position and I puncture also Li-20 and St-36. For a heat condition I also add Du-23 andf Liv-2. For wheezing: Ren-22 - 1.5 cun deep. Cupping may also be administered by those who find this modality helpful. In this case, use it on the upper back points after the removal of the needles. |

This is April 07 now... a year later, and I have a very stubborn case of hay fever, for whom I tried the above procedure without any success  This guy has also very weak immune system, very prone to chills and colds. Any magic for that?

I can give you an addition to my previously described tactics of treating the hayfever Tommy. It is especially effective for people having a marked deficiency in their immune system.
This addition consists of four points, which you need to puncture at the beginning of the treatment.
These are: Ren-7/ Ren-9/ K-16. These points encircle Ren-8 as you probably observed. They act to tonify the immune system, raise the Yang Qi and are of special effect for hayfever.
