Dr. Halevi I've taken your advice and have been using your nasal irrigation treatment with much success, thank you! I purchased at my local pharmacy a product that consisted of the small pot for water and packets containing the salt mix. It's been four weeks now and I'm out of the packets and I do not want to needlessly buy more when I can make up the solution. I know on your site you suggest salt alone, but the packets contain sodium bicarbonate (which is baking soda right?, what effect does baking soda have?). What would you suggest if I was to mix my own solution, ie. what kind of baking soda and how much in relation to the salt should I mix. Since using this treatment regularly I've experience much relief for my sinuses. I would recommend it to everyone, especially if you have allergies. Thank you |

Hi Sean, glad to hear of your relief by using the nasal irrigation. Actually, there is no need of buying the solution. Simply add 1 flat teaspoon of salt and 1 flat teaspoon of sodium bicarbonate powder and you have a fine solution. There is no need for a very accurate or complicated measuring of the components in this case. Just make sure you use clean sodium bicarbonate powder and NOT baking soda powder. |

If nasal irrigation is so good, why do you recommend also acupuncture for sinusitis, can it not be used alone? Also, if this simple procedure works such miracles (as Sean says) why are antibiotics usually prescribed in western medicine or even surgery is often recommended in chronic cases?

Nasal irrigation is indeed very helpful in sinusitis and is capable of clearing minor attacks of the disease and relieve the symptoms quite effectively. Acupuncture, when done properly, is extremely helpful in all kinds of sinusitis, including very severe incidents and/or chronic style sinusitis. For your second question, I don't really have an answer The same applies to many other conditions as well and not only sinusitis. There are many simple and effective healing methods to an alarmingly long list of diseases, methods that have a proven and consistent success rate, including acupuncture and herbal medicine. Still, modern medicine insists on prescribing its own doubtful (but scientific) solutions, no matter the cost. This is rather a philosophical or behavioral dilemma rather than a clean medical one, I suppose.
